What Is The Charge

Few reaction clips turn a simple question into such a memorable performance as “What Is The Charge.” The line is associated with the widely shared Australian arrest footage featuring Jack Karlson, whose flamboyant protest included the now-famous wording about “eating a meal” and a “succulent Chinese meal.” Even when heard without the surrounding video, the audio carries that same combination of outrage, theatrical delivery, and bewildered self-importance.

Its appeal comes from the contrast between the ordinary shape of the question and the dramatic force behind it. “What is the charge?” can sound genuinely confrontational, playfully defensive, or deliberately overacted depending on how it is dropped into a conversation. That flexibility makes it useful for gaming reactions, group-chat edits, livestream moments, and short-form videos where someone has been blamed, timed out, caught breaking an unspoken rule, or presented with an absurd consequence. The clip can also punctuate a meal-related joke, an unexpected bill, or any mock-serious interrogation.

The audio works best when the surrounding moment does not deserve quite so much courtroom-level intensity. Its recognisable Australian meme flavour helps it stand out from generic “what did I do?” reactions, giving even a minor disagreement a larger-than-life sense of occasion.
