Jumpscare

“Jumpscare” is an audio ambush: a sudden hit of tension and alarm that interrupts the listener’s expectations in an instant. The effect can stand on its own as a comic interruption, or heighten a visual moment that has been building toward a reveal. Its impact comes from contrast—the quieter or more ordinary the surrounding scene, the more dramatic the arrival feels.

On a soundboard, this clip fits naturally into horror-game reactions, spooky storytelling, prank-style edits, livestream banter, and deliberately over-the-top responses. It can punctuate a missed objective, a surprising message, an unexpected face appearing on screen, or any moment that deserves theatrical panic. The title is direct, so there is no mystery about the role it plays: this is the button for an immediate startle.

Timing matters more than repetition. Dropped into a pause, a suspiciously calm exchange, or the instant before a reveal, “Jumpscare” can turn a routine beat into a memorable reaction. Used sparingly, it stays funny and effective; played too often, the surprise naturally wears off. Its broad, language-independent character also makes it easy to understand in chats and gaming spaces across different audiences, including listeners in the US and New Zealand.
