Vhs Noise

“Vhs Noise” recreates the rough sonic atmosphere associated with aging videotape: a bed of hiss, faint crackle, electrical grain, and uneven analog texture. Rather than behaving like a clean musical effect, it adds a sense of physical media, as though the audio has passed through a cassette deck, home video player, or repeatedly copied recording. The result can feel warmly nostalgic, slightly unsettling, or intentionally degraded depending on what surrounds it.

In video edits, the sound works well beneath retro title cards, fake broadcast interruptions, old-camera footage, horror transitions, and scenes designed to suggest recovered or damaged media. It can also soften an overly polished digital production by introducing small imperfections that make the moment feel less synthetic. Layered quietly, “Vhs Noise” gives dialogue, music, or ambient footage a period-flavored background; played more prominently, it becomes a noticeable signal that the recording is unstable or deteriorating.

The effect suits memes and soundboards that lean into outdated technology, mysterious recordings, awkward silence, or sudden visual distortion. Because its character is textural rather than melodic, it can loop beneath a scene or appear briefly as an audio cue. Adjusting its volume and placement is key: subtle use suggests authenticity, while a louder burst creates a stronger glitchy, uneasy impression.
