Rimshot

Few percussion cues are as immediately recognizable as “Rimshot”: a brief rhythmic setup followed by the sharp, attention-grabbing snap of a drum rim. In comedy, that familiar ba-dum-tss punctuation traditionally arrives after a punchline, especially when the joke is intentionally cheesy, obvious, or met with theatrical self-satisfaction. The sound does not need a long buildup to communicate its meaning; its timing does most of the work.

On a soundboard, “Rimshot” can underline a pun in a group chat, punctuate an awkward one-liner during a livestream, or give a mock-serious finish to a video edit. It also works as a playful response when someone makes an especially predictable observation. Because the cue is so short, it can be dropped into conversations without overwhelming the surrounding dialogue or music.

The charm comes from its shared comedic vocabulary. Even without a visible stage or comedian, listeners understand that a joke has just landed—or perhaps failed spectacularly, which is often funnier. Keep the volume balanced with speech, since the crisp attack can cut through audio quickly. Used sparingly, “Rimshot” adds clean timing, recognizable vaudeville-style flavor, and a little extra personality to ordinary reactions.
