They Fly Now

“They Fly Now” comes from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, during a sequence in which the heroes discover that First Order stormtroopers are equipped with jetpacks. The repeated reaction—“They fly now?”—turns a tactical surprise into an instantly recognizable comedic beat. What makes the clip memorable is the contrast between the characters’ urgent situation and their almost exasperated disbelief at this newly inconvenient development.

As a soundboard entry, the phrase works because it communicates far more than surprise. It can signal that the rules have changed, an opponent has unlocked an unexpected advantage, or a familiar problem has suddenly become much more complicated. The delivery has a brisk, conversational quality rather than a long dramatic buildup, so it lands cleanly in voice chats, gameplay commentary, meme edits, and group conversations. It also suits moments when someone introduces an obvious solution far later than expected—the humor comes from the implication that, yes, the capability exists now, and everyone has to deal with it.

The clip carries strong Star Wars recognition without needing much setup, while its wording remains broad enough to function outside the franchise. Pair it with a surprise reveal, a difficult match, a new software feature, or an unexpected plot twist, and the reaction feels immediate, familiar, and lightly theatrical.
