Bad Joke

A joke can be delivered with total confidence and still receive nothing but silence. “Bad Joke” packages that uncomfortable moment into a compact comedic reaction, combining the feel of a deliberately underwhelming drum cue with the empty pause associated with crickets. The result is less an insult than an audio raised eyebrow: a quick way to acknowledge that the punchline did not survive contact with the audience.

Its aliases, “bad-joke-drums” and “bad-joke-crickets,” point to the two-part character of the clip. The drum element gives the scene a mock-dramatic finish, while the cricket-like quiet adds the real sting by emphasizing how little response the joke received. That contrast makes the sound easy to understand even without visual context. A listener immediately knows that a pun, comeback, announcement, or overconfident comment has fallen flat.

On a soundboard, “Bad Joke” works best as a timing-based reaction. Trigger it just after a deliberately terrible pun, during a friend’s failed roast, or when a voice-chat conversation suddenly becomes painfully quiet. It can also add comic punctuation to edited videos, livestream moments, gaming banter, and meme-style posts. The clip’s appeal comes from its restraint: rather than overwhelming the conversation, it briefly frames the awkwardness and lets the silence deliver the punchline.
