Tinnitus

“Tinnitus” is built around a narrow, piercing tone with very little rhythmic movement, giving it an uncomfortable sense of suspension. Instead of announcing itself with a dramatic hit, it occupies the background of attention—steady, bright, and difficult to ignore. That simplicity makes the effect immediately readable: something has happened, the environment has gone strangely quiet, and the listener is left with a ringing sensation.

In editing, the sound can suggest a character recovering from a loud blast, a collision, a flash of panic, or an overwhelming moment. It also works as a deliberately exaggerated reaction cue after a painfully awkward comment, a chaotic gaming exchange, or a joke that lands with absolute silence. Layered beneath room tone or a muffled transition, it can create the impression that ordinary hearing has briefly narrowed to a single intrusive frequency.

The title refers to tinnitus, a real perception of ringing or similar noise in the ears, but the audio itself functions as a stylized sound effect rather than a medical representation. Its strongest quality is restraint: a short appearance can make a scene feel disorienting, while a longer hold can turn the discomfort into comedy. Use gentle fades when you want a cinematic aftershock, or a sudden cut-in for a sharper meme-style interruption.
