I Am Not A Possum!

Few things are funnier than responding to a completely ordinary situation with total certainty about something nobody seriously suspected. “I Am Not A Possum!” captures that kind of theatrical denial: concise, emphatic, and wonderfully ridiculous. The title alone suggests a character defending their identity with far more passion than the circumstances could possibly require, which gives the clip its comic personality even without additional context.

On a soundboard, the phrase works as a sharp reaction to suspicion, confusion, or an accusation that has become deliberately nonsensical. It can punctuate a friend’s strange excuse, interrupt an escalating bit, or serve as an absurd answer to almost any question. The all-caps feeling of the wording makes it especially suited to moments that need a sudden burst of mock outrage rather than a long explanation. It also fits animal-themed jokes, New Zealand-focused meme culture, and conversations where deadpan absurdity is the entire point.

Its appeal comes from the contrast between the ordinary structure of “I am not…” and the unexpected appearance of “a possum.” That sudden turn gives the line strong replay value and makes it easy to recognise in a busy soundboard. Drop it into a call, stream, group chat, or edited comedy moment when a normal response would be far too sensible. The result is an immediate shift from conversation to character performance.
